Monday Missive: October 25

I was still recovering from being sick this weekend, so we were mostly at home, but we tried to make it as scenic as possible-we had a birthday party for Mr. Trucks and the girls decorated and baked a cake for that, then we had a spooky outdoor movie night and watch Hocus Pocus and Addams Family Values, and on Sunday we carved pumpkins and had hot chocolate. - Eloise

I had a great time over the weekend enjoying Boston. From walking along the river to see the Head of the Charles Regatta taking place, to meeting one of my best friend’s babies for the first time, and seeing an excellent show by Dalton & the Sherriffs! I also took some time to rest and have some much needed time to myself - this week is going to be a busy and stressful one, so I’m glad I had time to recharge. - Dinah

What We’re Reading and Watching

  • Last week I went on a binge of my favorite Halloween-y movies! I watched Addams Family Values (which is one of the funniest movies of all time), Teen Witch (“top that” is iconic!), and The Craft. This week I’m planning on watching Casper, Scream, and some of my favorite episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer - the perfect level of scary for me! - D

  • I started the YA Crave series by Tracy Wolff that Dinah recommended last week about vampires and other supernatural creatures at a boarding school in Alaska. It’s wild and not what I normally read but I’m a sucker for forbidden love, so I was hooked immediately! -E

  • I also tried to read The Turnout by Megan Abbott but couldn’t get through it. It’s rare for me to not finish a book once I start, but this was too dark and slow for me. -E

  • Loved this podcast with Melissa Wood-Tepperberg talking about all of her health and beauty routines and tips. She had so many very specific recommendations that I want to try. I’m ordering a gua sha tool and some of her favorite make up products asap. -E

  • My big read of last week was Ace of Spades (a Grace Atwood rec!), which is about two black teenagers who attend an exclusive private school, and started getting their secrets called out to the rest of the student body via anonymous text messages. It felt like Gossip Girl at the beginning, but then gets very twisty as they try to figure out who is targeting them, who can be trusted and why. - D

What We’re Buying

  • After listening to this podcast, I really want to try an order from Dry Farm Wines. I’ve basically had to give up drinking wine lately because it was giving my headaches and waking me up in the middle of the night, but this seems like it might be the solution. Has anyone out there tried it? -E

  • I had to shout out the green skirt that Dinah put in this post. I ordered it and love it and wear it all the time and we’ve had other friends who also got it and love it!

  • Two of my friends came to visit the other weekend, and one of them gifted me the yummiest fall candle. I usually tend more towards fresh or bright floral scents, but the Nutmeg scent has been making me feel all cozy the last two weeks. - D

What We’re Making

  • I wanted to make a dinner with what I had in my fridge, and just buy the right protein, so I was excited to find the Half Baked Harvest recipe for the Sheet Pan Sticky Ginger Sesame Chicken and Crispy Brussels Sprouts. It was pretty easy to make, but like with all of her recipes, definitely try to do as much of the prep as you can in advance. I always end up in a flat out panic for 20 minutes trying to juggle the various components! - D
