Monday Missive: November 8

I had such a fun week of get togethers with girlfriends that I hadn’t seen since before Covid! I took the most amazing calligraphy class led by my friend Katherine at Rosebud Calligraphy, went to drinks with other friends and now am on Cape Cod for a 4 day mini-vacation. It’s been a whirlwind, plus I’ve been prepping for a trip later this week to visit Eloise! Is it possible to have too much fun? - D

I’m so happy to be back to being healthy! After being stuck at home for what felt like most of October, I appreciated just being able to run around and do errands and see people. My parents stopped for by for one night and I went antiquing in Baltimore with a friend and found a rug and chair for my office. On the less glamorous side, I spent some time cleaning out the attic which had been ransacked after I had stored all of mine and Chad’s clothes up there while our closet was being redone, and now is satisfyingly organized. Then Sunday was a lacrosse tournament day in the nicest fall weather. - E

What We’re Reading and Watching

  • I’ve been watching The Other Two on HBO and it’s that awkward funny but with a sweetness at it’s base that keeps it from being too cringey. Brooke and Carey are struggling to make it big in New York after years on the scene, when their 13 year old brother suddenly become an internet singing sensation. Grappling with his easy fame and success and their own failures is awkward, but Molly Shannon as their mom is hilarious, and the family’s underlying love for each other is the baseline of the show that runs under all the terrible choices that they make. -E

  • I’ve been in the mood for a light romance, and The Summer Job hit the spot! It’s about a woman who pretends to be her sommelier best friend and take her place at a remote Scottish resort. She tries to keep her secret identity, learn about wine and flirt with the cute chef - it was delightful, but a little bit stressful! - D

  • Holiday movies are starting to come out on streaming services and I decided to watch Love Hard, which stars Nina Dobrev. She falls for a man she meets on an app and travels to Lake Placid to surprise him for the holidays only to discover that she has been catfished - but the guy in the pictures does actually live in the town. It was silly and predictable, but the perfect entry into the holiday rom com season. - D

  • The girls and I have been loving watching Baking Impossible on Netflix, which combines baking and engineering challenges in one. A mini golf course made out of cake? Yum! -E

What We’re Buying

  • I saw these inexpensive gold de-puffing eye masks recommended by Meredith Hudkins and immediately added them to my cart. -E

  • I’m ordering all the plaid pillows for the season! -E

  • I went to the cutest stores in Baltimore this weekend looking for unique gifts. Watermelon Sugar was perfect for all the paper goods and I’m coveting their display of pastel Christmas houses and Antique Exchange had an amazing mix of vintage and new furnishings and accessories. -E

  • My skin has not been happy lately ( I don’t know if it’s the change in the seasons, some stress or too much wine…), but none of my usual remedies have been working. I picked up the Kate Somerville ExfoliKate Liquid to give it a try and it’s really helped! Some big hormonal chin acne is going away and the rest of my skin is looking better overall. - D

  • For my Cape Cod trip, we had a Goldbelly gift certificate to use and decided to splurge on caviar and smoked salmon from Russ & Daughters for an over-the-top dinner. It made for a fabulous spread! - D

What We’re Making

  • I made the Barefoot Contessa Chicken Stew with Biscuits for dinner on Saturday night when my parents were in town and it was hit across the board. Even the kids went back for seconds, although I couldn’t convince them to eat the mini onions, which was shocking to me! Those are like little presents and I need to find more recipes that use them. -E

  • Last week I impulse bought shishito peppers at the store because I wanted to try making them for myself! It was so easy to blister them (all you need is a very hot pan and sesame oil) and they made dinner that night feel extra special. - D
