Monday Missive: November 1
It’s November! We had such a fun Halloween weekend once we got through the crazy rain and flooding, with trick or treating and friends and so much candy last night. There was only one meltdown (it was itchy wig related) and otherwise we had a great time making baked brie that looked like a mummy, setting up a spooky tableau at the end of the driveway and wearing all the dramatic make up. It’s so nice that in Maryland, the weather stays warm until Halloween and then we get a ten degree temperature drop and it feels ready for the next season. It always prompts me to switch out my warm weather pillows and throws for something cozier, and we’ll be sharing lots of ideas for that later in the week! -E
Halloween as an adult with no kids feels a little bit different, and mine was a series of bon voyage celebrations for a close friend who is moving! I had a little bit too much fun balanced with hiding from the rain and nursing my headaches, but yesterday I took a long walk and then tried to enjoy some Halloween fun by strolling through the part of my neighborhood where they close off the streets for trick or treating. This week I have some fun plans (like a Sip n’ Script calligraphy class that my friend Katherine is leading!), and then a week of travel coming up that I need to prepare for. - D

What We’re Reading and Watching
I watched The Way Down this weekend and it was dark but fascinating. It’s about Gwen Shamblin, who founds a diet program based on turning to God instead of food, markets it through churches, and then eventually ends up starting her own church in Brentwood, Tennessee, that veers decidedly into cult territory. The documentary isn’t perfectly put together in my opinion, but it’s a crazy (and dark) story and Gwen’s hair is fascinating enough for a documentary all of it’s own! -E
The Ex Hex by Erin Sterling was such a good read for Halloween, because it’s a rom com with witches, but I would have enjoyed it at any time during the year. And who doesn’t wish that they could have put a silly hex on an ex boyfriend or two? -E
I finally finished Ted Lasso season 2 this week - I had three episodes left - and was so fired up at the end! I couldn’t get over what that one character did, and was also really on an emotional rollercoaster waiting to see what happened with my favorites Roy and Keeley. It cracked me up how many people were dressed up as the cast for Halloween too. - D
What We’re Buying
Still living in my Alex Mill cardigan and thinking about adding this sweater to the rotation too. -E
I just got these lampshades for our guest room and they add such a nice touch to the room. -E
I need more sweaters and am obsessed with the ruffle collar on this one from Amazon! - D
What We’re Making
I made my favorite Bacon and Goat Cheese Wrapped Dates this weekend and they were as yummy as I remembered. The spicy rosemary honey adds such a good kick. They’re also so convenient because you can assemble them ahead of time and then pop in the over for a half an hour right before you need them to be ready. -E
Making this Sweet Potato Southwest Quinoa Bowl for dinner tonight and planning to double everything for lunch leftovers.
All I want this week is vegetables to balance out the excessive amounts of Italian food and martinis I consumed over the weekend, so I’m turning to my favorite Goop cauliflower rice bowls. - D
