Monday Missive: April 18

It’s still my favorite weekend in Boston, Marathon Weekend! I don’t know about your city, but here the Marathon is a HUGE deal, and also when we celebrate Patriot’s Day, to mark when the first shots of Revolutionary War were fired just outside of Boston. Monday is a holiday for me at work, so I get to meet friends for brunch and then watch one of my closest friends here finish the race (Go Britt!!!), which I’m so excited for. The energy in my neighborhood is so insane and I love supporting all of the runners.

The rest of my weekend was a mixed bag! I ran a 5K on Saturday, which crossed the Marathon finish line and was such a good time, and then had an event for work after. My Easter was a little bit less fun, with a close family member getting Covid and our celebration being cancelled, but we managed to make a beautiful dinner and drank a bottle of nice champagne to salvage it. Eloise was sick all weekend, so this Monday Missive is going to be a solo effort! - D

What We’re Reading and Watching

  • I just started The Last Grand Duchess, told from the perspective of Olga Romanov, the eldest daughter of Tsar Nicholas, whose family was so famously executed during the Russian Revolution. I had obviously heard a lot about her younger sister Anastasia, but do not know much about the other sisters, so it’s been very interesting and an entertaining read. - D

  • Has anyone else watched Minx on HBOMax? It’s about a feminist writer in the 1970’s who essentially can only get her vision of a magazine made by a nudie magazine publisher. I think it’s meant to be inspired by Playgirl? It’s very funny and smart, and my boyfriend and I both like it, although there is a bunch of nudity in it, so be warned to not watch with kids around! - D

  • If you are interested in the Queen, one of the best books I have read is The Other Side of the Coin by Angela Kelly, who is her personal dresser. It gives valuable insight into the day-to-day of royal life, all of the moving pieces that play into it and shares some moving moments. It’s been updated with new chapters that cover Covid and Prince Philip’s death - nothing groundbreaking is revealed in the excerpts, but I love hearing about life in the palaces from the people who work there and we rarely hear from. Plus, the royal wardrobe details are amazing. - D

What We’re Buying

What We’re Making

  • Had the yummiest potato stacks from Half Baked Harvest on Easter! The recipe came from her new cookbook, but is similar to this one. - D

  • The other Easter food highlight was Ina’s Rosemary Rack of Lamb. Easy to make in advance and didn’t even need the Tzatziki! - D
