Closet Organization Tools
We built a new primary closet this year, taking the very small and sad one that Chad and I had been sharing and knocking down the walls to push it into the empty crawl space that wasn’t being used. Jane from California Closets designed it for us and did an amazing job! Once all of the built-ins were installed, she also helped me figure out how to store and display everything so it took full advantage of the space and gave me the grown-up fancy closet vibes that I had been dreaming of.
I finally got around to actually ordering and implementing her tips and other tips that Dinah had shared this January when I was in an organizing mood, so I thought it would be fun to share them, since so many of their suggestions were new to me.
One things that wasn’t new to me but was very helpful were the Marie Kondo books. When going through the clothes that had been living in boxes and racks up in my attic for months, I tried not to put anything into the new closet that didn’t spark joy. This was probably harder than it should have been for me because I’m emotionally attached to my stuff, but it was good practice and I found that there were so many items that I had outgrown or worn out, and I was ready to thank them for everything that they had given me and let them move on to their next phase. If you haven’t read her books, I would highly recommend!
Clutch Organizer
Dinah told me that I need an acrylic magazine holders to organize my clutches and she was right! I got this one from the Container Store and it’s perfect. I doubled up some of the very thin clutches to get more use out of it, and then put some larger purses that could stand on their own on the sides.
Boot Organizer
I didn’t even know that boot organizers existed until Jane told me I needed them! I tried two different kinds here-one that’s simple loop that holds the boots together and one that has expandable inserts that go inside the boots. I think the expandable one are more supporting and really keep the boots straight, but the clips/loops are much less expensive and still effective.
The Best Matching Hangers
I know that having matching hangers is basic, but it really does make a difference! And these thin, multipurpose hangers allow you to fit so many more pieces into the same space and work for pants or tops. I love that they work for everything because it makes such a visual difference in the closet to have everything on the same type of hanger. I used to have velvet hangers for tops and then different hangers for pants and then Chad had his own type of hanger, and this is visually much cleaner.
Headband Organizer
Dinah also told me that I needed an acrylic headband holder, so I ordered one from Amazon and it was so satisfying! This one can have a single row of headbands, like I’ve done, or you can use the sides and put two rows of headbands to maximize your storage. It’s just the right size, so I don’t feel like it’s stretching out the headbands, which was one thing I had initially worried about.
These organizers have been great for getting settled in the new space, but they honestly would have made such a difference in the old space as well-I wish I had found them years ago. There is something so satisfying about putting everything in a holder or designated space!
