Monday Missive: June 28

I had a magical three days “down the Cape” (as they say here in Boston), bookended by some work craziness! I did everything I wanted to on this mini-break - swam in the ocean, made frozen drinks, ate lobster and oysters and had an insanely huge ice cream cone. I also made a big dent in my reading list, finishing two books that I absolutely loved. - Dinah

We had a great time in South Carolina, with surf lessons for the kids, a day trip to Savannah with lot’s of shopping for me, and golf and beach time for all. The improbably large amount of bathing suits that I packed for the kids were all used and I got through three books on the trip, which were all really good! Now we have a week to prep for sleep away camp and the 4th of July! - Eloise

What We’re Reading and Watching

  • Good Company by Cynthia Sweeney was just as the name describes it-a good read about two couples who have been friends through the highs and lows, when one of them discovers a secret from long ago that could upend their fragile balance. I really enjoyed both couples: one is more glamorous- the wife is one of the stars of a Grey’s Anatomy like tv show and her husband is a prominent doctor - but I also found so much to pull me in about the wife in the other couple, who is trying to figure out where the next stage in life should take her -E ( I read it too and loved it! - D)

  • Malibu Rising is definitely in the running to be my favorite book of the summer! You can read the full review here. -E

  • Season 2 of Flack is here, and I’m excited to get back into the hot mess that is Robyn’s life as a PR maven in London. In the finale of Season 1, she had worked miracles for her clients but taken a powder keg to her personal life, so I’m dying to know where things go from here. -E (I watched it the other weekend and it was just as messy as the first season - I especially loved the new storylines they gave to Eve and Caroline! - D)

  • Over the weekend I read A Special Place for Women by Laura Hankin in about two days. I had loved her book Happy and You Know It about a toxic mommy group on the Upper East Side and was so excited to read this takedown of exclusive women’s clubs, told through the eyes of Jillian, a journalist trying to infiltrate their ranks. Her books always have one or two amazing twists that I don’t see coming, but also end up being very sympathetic to all of the characters. Perfect beach reads! - D

What We’re Buying

  • While shopping in Savannah, I wandered into The Edition Shop and fell in love with everything in there, especially the line of Cleobella clothing that they carry. There are so many soft and airy prints and neutrals and I wanted one of everything. -E

  • I want these shoes from J. Crew-they look like the perfect summer sandal. And I’m stocking up on these simple shorts for everyday. -E

  • I was packing for the Cape and realized that all of my shorts had gotten sad, so I popped into H&M to see what they had, and came out with this adorable linen pair! I bought the coral, but they have them in more colors, and so many other good affordable short options. The length is perfect and they are super comfy. - D

What We’re Making

  • I’m going to our cousin’s house for dinner this week and planning on making a version of a roasted beet, goat cheese and arugula salad - just without breading and frying the cheese to make it travel more easily! Learning to roast beets was one of my major lockdown culinary successes. - D
