Monday Missive: May 23

This weekend was full of fun for both of us. Dinah was in Watch Hill working on wedding planning and seeing family, and I was zipping between lacrosse games and children’s plays (we got to see two children’s shows of Beauty and the Beast, one of Frozen, and a little taste of Aladdin too!), all while trying to beat the heat. The 90+ degree weather in Maryland was great excuse to finally get out on the boat, and we loved being out on the water and feeling like summer was here! It was just the hint of vacation that we needed while we’re in the midst of the spring rush. And construction on our backyard keeps coming along. The stone work is almost complete, and then we’ll get into the pavilion and landscaping, along with filling up the pool next week.

What We’re Reading and Watching

  • I read The Summer Place by Jennifer Weiner last week and really enjoyed it. There’s a wedding, an affair, a death and lots of beautiful Cape Cod scenery-everything you need in a beach read that was more heartfelt than salacious. I was rooting for almost all of the characters to find happiness, but there were also twists along the way that I didn’t see coming and that kept me up reading way too late. - E

  • Speaking of books I can’t put down, I loved seeing this tour of author Emma Straub’s Brooklyn home! - E

  • I also loved this list of films to mend a broken heart, whether you’re in the stage of eating ice cream in bed or wanting to believe that there’s hope out there. - E

  • Has anyone watched Conversations with Friends yet on Hulu? It’s on my to do list for the week and I’m really looking forward to it. I have such a soft spot for Jemima Kirke and Joe Alwyn. - E

  • And have you pre-ordered your copy of American Royals III: Rivals? Lila and I have been counting down the days until we can read it and it’s finally almost here! - E

  • My watch list this week is Rebel Wilson’s new very dumb comedy Senior Year on Netflix about a high school cheerleader who gets a head injury and wakes up 20 years later and goes back to high school. It seems like just the level I can handle these days! - D

What We’re Buying

  • New favorite outfit from the weekend: this midi dress from Old Navy with this stretchy raffia belt from Target and my Manebi slides. It was the perfect beat the heat choice. -E

  • Eyeing this new to me brand on Tuckernuck-this dress and this dress are really calling my name! -E

  • This striped tank is so cute and only $10. -E

  • Crate and Barrel has so many great simple vases like this one right now. They’re heavy and feel like a really good quality but for a reasonable price point. -E

  • I’m fully obsessed with this bag that I recently got from Anthropologie (I bought the natural beige color)! It matches everything, is huge and has a chain that so that I can wear it on my shoulder. I also love this pearl embellished tote on the website. - D

  • I shared these on IG, but we love the HiHo Caribbean sweaters - they are the perfect summer weight! - D

What We’re Making

  • Obsessed with these parmesan snacks right now. - E

  • We tried this recipe for Snap Pea Salad with Lemon Vinaigrette from the Minimalist Baker and loved it. I thought there was almost too much dressing, so I ended up adding some spinach to dilute it a little bit, but it was overall a big hit with the kids and we could even enjoy the leftovers the next day. - E

  • I’m trying to come up with an idea for a dessert to bring on the boat to watch the Blue Angels on Wednesday. Thinking maybe these patriotic sugar cookies? I would love to make this firecracker bundt cake, but I’m not sure how well it would travel…(or how much falling sprinkles would drive Chad crazy on his nice clean boat, haha!) -E
