Monday Missive: June 27

We’re in Watch Hill and it feels like summer! We hit every shop in the village, got ice cream at St. Clair’s more than once, walked the beaches and swam to the raft (well, the girls swam to the raft-there was no way that I was getting into that freezing cold water!). The most magical thing that happened, though, was the incredible rainbow that we saw on Friday night. After a sad day full of scary news, I was having dinner outside with my mom and cousin and our children and the most clear and complete rainbow I’ve ever seen appeared over the town. It sounds cheesy, but I really felt like it was nature’s reminder that there is hope for the future and that we can make the world a better place. Now, to translate that hope into action. - E

I was in Boston for the weekend, because I was running the Boston Athletic Association’s 10K race on Sunday. It was extremely hot here, and I have to admit that the last few miles were a struggle, but I’m so happy I finished it! One of my big goals for the year is to run their race medley, so now I just have the fall Half Marathon to complete. Otherwise, we saw the Elvis movie on Friday night (more on that below), and I spent Saturday running errands on a quest to find the last few items I need for my summer wardrobe. Like Eloise, I also want to reiterate that this weekend was very heavy because of the SCOTUS decision, but I spent the weekend trying to find the good and figure out what action looks like for me personally. - D

What We’re Reading and Watching

  • I started this book over the weekend and it has totally sucked me in and stressed me out! -E

  • For anyone who still loves their American Girl dolls, this account is wild and fun! -E

  • This article about building friendships gave me so much good information. -E

  • One of my friends has her kids do a phone free day once a week, and I’m thinking about trying that for the kids and myself this summer. especially after reading this article. That peace of mind and living in the moment is just what we all want over the summer, right? -E

  • Did anyone else watch the season premiere of Southern Charm? So messy in all the right ways! I’m excited that Naomi’s back in town, I’m happy to see Craig finally calling Shep out, and I’m looking forward to seeing what the new people bring into the mix. -E

  • How do I get an invite to a tour of Martha’s perennial garden IRL?

  • I saw the Elvis movie, which I was so excited for because I have loved the King since I was a little girl, and I usually love Baz Luhrmann’s movies (and worked with him and his wife on a few projects around the Great Gatsby movie coming out!). The high was that Austin Butler was amazing as Elvis, but it was way too little of him and way too much of Tom Hanks, who had the worst prosthetics and was honestly just terrible. It also skipped over so many Elvis events I think of as high points, and didn’t really age up the characters even as it jumped forward years into the future. Overall disappointing, but made me want to watch more Elvis docs and relive the true story! - D

  • We started watching the new Maya Rudolph show on Apple TV - Loot - which is so good! She plays a Melinda Gates-type character who divorces her tech mogul husband, discovers she has a non-profit in her name and starts working there to find purpose. It’s amazing, which a ton of funny bits based on how rich she is, and entertaining side characters. - D

  • The first three eps of Real Housewives Ex Wives Club are on Peacock and it’s incredible! I’m obsessed with Phaedra and Eva, enjoying Tamra and otherwise remembering why the other women got fired cough, Vicki, cough). Also, it’s wild to see the work some of them have had done since leaving their shows! - D
