Easy July 4th Desserts

For our Festive Friday post this week, we’re making all the July 4th treats! We’re heading to a family party tonight and the girls and I decided it would be really fun to make some easy and kid friendly treats. Cece picked Jell-O, Hadley picked Rice Krispies treats and Lila wanted to make cookies. Add some food coloring and star-shaped sprinkles and voila! The most fun and delicious patriotic desserts.

Easy July 4th Desserts

Cece’s Patriotic Jello Bites

We originally wanted to make the Jell-O layers in cups, but when we got home from the party store and opened up the cups, it turned out that I had accidentally purchased clear glasses with the shape of shot glass inside. Oops! Since that wasn’t totally appropriate for a family party, we decided to improvise and make bite sized Jell-O pieces instead. It turns out that I’ve never actually made Jello with my kids before (despite the fact that a goblet full of red Jell-O with Cool Whip on top was may favorite dessert at boarding school), so they thought it was the most fun thing. We used this recipe and it was super easy and the bites were stiff enough to hold their shape and stand on their own.

Hadley’s Patriotic Rice Krispies Treats

Hadley wanted straightforward Rice Krispies treats as a universal crowd pleaser for kids, but we couldn’t resist adding a little bit of frosting, some star shaped sprinkles and then turning them into lollipops with some cute striped paper straws that we found in the pantry. She made them completely by herself and did a great job!

Lila’s Red, White and Blue Swirl Cookies

Lila loves to bake and found this recipe for swirl sugar cookies online and was dying to give it a try. She was able to do almost all of it herself-just a little help with the rolling and layering of the dough. Halfway through the project, we were a little stressed and unsure about how well they were going to turn out, but she just kept following the directions and the result were totally worth it. They’re delicious (and maybe a little more pink than red, but we’re not stressing about that).

Happy Fourth of July Everyone!
